I imported some posts and later changed the author. New comment replies are grabbing the correct one but the existing comments seem to be "hard coded" and will not update even though the post author for those comments has changed as well.

Any way to fix or "force" to update?

If the comment was left by the previous author, those won't update when the post author is changed, since the comments are tied to the user and not who wrote the post. You can go into the comments and manually edit them, but otherwise there is no way to change the avatar as it pulls from the email address of the user who left the comment.
