I'm almost done redesigning one of my sites (my favorite site) on Minimum and I've come across a bit of a dilemma…
Along the redesign, I was considering adding a "Quick Blog" section as a separate custom post type with it's own taxonomy.
The idea behind it was to have a place to write quick blog posts that are short and spontaneous and because of that don't really fit in the main blog of the site along with all the long and detailed articles.
Apart from that quick blog there is a new section called "Specialty" which functions much like pages within a very specific topic.
Anyway, I like simplicity. While I wanted to keep the quick blog completely separate from the main blog to give it it's own distinction, I'm not starting to think I should just keep it simple stupid and create a "Quick Blog" category in the main blog and call it a day. I can then distinguish the topics of the Quick Blog category with tags. Simple.
What do you all think? 1. Separate Quick Blog custom post type or 2. Simple Quick Blog category?

March 6, 2013 at 9:13 pm #24719eluviisMemberHi Susan, that's what I did. I still haven't published the site, so I can change my mind still. I might run a couple of more tests, but I think I'm 95% sure I'll keep it a category only. My only debate is the quality of the content from Quick Blog to the rest of the categories might not be up to par. I mean, discussing YouTube videos, a quick car meet, etc, etc, might not be content suitable to be alongside the quality of the main blog. That's my only hold up. Not to mention, the photography in the main blog is 100% professional level. In the quick blog I might want to share a low quality cell phone photo. I'm afraid it might dirty up my main blog. Still feel the same way?
March 6, 2013 at 9:20 pm #24722SusanModeratorI guess it depends on the subject matter (and audience) of your site. A professional business blog probably wouldn't want to have that, but then someone like The Pioneer Woman, who is known for professional photography features Instagram pictures in some of her posts.

Because I of this, I've gone back and forth a couple of times from naming the blog "Stories" or "Blog" I feel that if Quickblog exists as a separate custom post type, then the blog would be named STORIES to help differentiate the two. But, if the Quickblog is going to be a category of the main blog (or department in my case), then the blog can be named BLOG.
You can take a look at what I have going on here: http://rightisbackside.com (eventually it will go and replace the current rallyways.com site).
