    How would I go about making the Swank Portfolio more functional in terms of when someone clicks on one image from the portfolio page - instead of having to hit the back button to go back to the main portfolio page, they can just click to the next image?

    Add pagination to the image attachment page is one solution.

    You can see how its done in the Twenty Fourteen themes attachment pages.
