I don't understand how the Balance theme sizes photos for the home page... it's split in 2 columns and looks like a mess because the photos are all different sizes. Short of needing to make every photo on my blog the exact same dimensions (not quite realistic) is there a way to get the featured images to be the same size, like by displaying the thumbnail or mid sized version every time? Thanks!

Hard to tell without seeing your site, but you may need to Regenerate Thumbnails.
