Can anyone enlighten me as to why this is happening and how I can fix this problem?

It happens, for example, when a user sets some text to italic and they select also the space next to the word they wish to italicize or bold etc.

It may have started happening after the last wp update but I cannot be certain.

    Thanks! Cory-

    Hi Cory.

    A couple of questions:
Can you please provide a link to the page where this is happening?
Is this issue on one browser or all?
Is this in the post/page once it is published, or is it just in the editor?

    Thanks.

    the link:

Browsers: Yes it happens in all browsers although ie displays an empty square.

Post/Page: Yes; it does not display on the back-end in the editor, just in the browser.

    Thanks for the response!

Hmmm this is a good one.

Check out the following link for a possible fix.

I don't think it's the same root cause that you are experiencing as I checked your encoding and it's displaying as UTF-8, but give it a go and see if it works.

Another possible solution comes from here:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/black-diamonds-with-question-marks-in-my-restore

Try going into the WP "reading" settings and change to iso-8859-1

I'll keep looking for a solution, but it is indeed very strange.

    Good luck.

It is an encoding problem, but not necessarily related to your chosen character set.

Did you use Word or another word processor to write the articles?

That most often occurs when articles are written in Word, and then cut-and-pasted into WordPress. Word uses a lot of embedded characters that are not legitimate web characters. You are getting a square of a strange character because the browser does not understand the embedded character code.

You can either save the Word document as a text document prior to a cut-and-paste, or you can go through the article and correct the characters in the WordPress editor.
