I've tried to add a few of the snippets to the functions.php file to get either a read more link or button, and I keep getting the following error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '"' in /home7/theposs9/public_html/wp-content/themes/genesis-sample/functions.php on line 89

I'm completely new to this, and even when I remove the snippets I still get the error. I have no idea what to do and was wondering if someone could help me figure it out.

PHP is very particular as to the type of quotes that can be used in code. Straight quotes are rule. If your text editor converted any of the quotes to curly quotes, you'll see errors like yours. Without actually seeing the code, this is just a guess.

I figured it out on my own with FTP.

Is there a place where I should insert the Read More script into the functions.php to make it work?

I usually place custom code the end.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot and see how it goes.
