Questions on framework usage

Hi ....I have been using thesis for awhile and would like to use the genesis framework also. Thesis is free to use over and over as long as i use it on domains i own....but i need to pay a fee to use it on domains i do not own. Can i use the genesis framework on any and all domains after paying for it once? ...So no extra fees to use it on client sites? Also if i was to purchase the theme's option (i think its called pro) can i also use all on client sites without any added charge?......just want to make sure before i go-ahead and purchase...thanks

Hi Nomad,

Yes, once you purchase Genesis Framework, you can re-use it as many times an on as many domains as you wish. The same goes for any StudioPress child theme. I have the Pro Pack and it was money well spent. 🙂

Thanks for that Carrie...I have gone ahead and purchased the pro account....and ready to get stuck in. Another question.....if i am using one of the child themes to develop a site for a client and am changing the css file of the child theme to suit the clients look and design...can i change the name of the css file so that it represents the clients brand or must it stay intact as the child theme name? i would then obviously also change the name where it is being requested......thank you for your help

No worries, I'm on my first cup of the morning.

You can modify the child themes as much as you want or even change the names. Just don't modify any of parent Genesis theme files.

Hi Carrie.....just wanted to be clear....that when i develop a site for a client and use the genesis framework as well as a child theme i can change the name of the child theme to suit the client as i will be "redesigning" the look. just want to make sure i can do this without any issues. Also can i remove the genesis credit and change it to something different (like a link to my website crediting design)?

Hi there,

Yep, you are absolutely correct. Genesis (and WordPress) are licensed under GPL, which gives you great freedom to modify for your own use.

That said, I would recommend leaving a reference to Genesis in the child theme stylesheet - maybe something like "XYZ is a custom child theme based on the Associate Whatever Theme and built on the Genesis Framework".

You're not *obligated* to do that at all -- I recommend it so that if another developer/designer were to pick up your code, they'd have the a reference point. That's how I credit my own themes, at least. 🙂
