Parallax – Footer widgets won't align horizontally

I changed the footer to a 2 column layout in the functions file using: add_theme_support( 'genesis-footer-widgets', 2 );

I then added the following to the CSS:
.footer-widgets-1 {
width: 40%; /* 570px / 1200px */
margin-right: 5%; /* 60px / 1200px */
float: left !important;
}

.footer-widgets-2 {
width: 40%; /* 570px / 1200px */
float: right !important;}

However the widgets will not align horizontally. What am I missing??
