Need widget areas for slider, home page bottom in Going Green

I need to add some widget areas to my Going Green theme.

Slider
I need a slider in the top left of the homepage, as seen at http://brownfieldagnews.com.

Home featured section
I also need to add a home featured section, as on the website above. (On our current site, this is where we host Rural Issues, Managing for Profit, Hoofbeat, etc.) This is the same widget area already configured into the Lifestyle theme.

What is the best way to incorporate these? I've read the StudioPress tutorial for registering widgets, as well as Nick the Geek's tutorial, but feel a little overwhelmed.

Thoughts and suggestions much appreciated.

A widget section between the body and the footer would be nice, too.
