    The upper right custom menu for the modern portfolio theme is installed and working. With imported demo content, it sat about middle left next to the logo. The instructions call for a css class for the menu but then don't say what it is. I did some firebug and thought I had it fixed with a class of genesis-nav-menu placed in the menu css classes option area. I added that for all menu choices but that only fixed the font appearence not the menu alignment which is stacked on top rather than across. The site is: http://www.greengarderjournal.com.

    Any ideas would be appreciated. I found a few references on the web about editing the style sheet and inline:block but I don't want to spend tons of time testing different things, I've already spent quite a while getting this up. Thanks.

    If you remove this, the links become horizontal.

    .genesis-nav-menu {
    clear: both;
    overflow: hidden;
    }

    Thank you very much asdweb, that did the trick. Here is what I got back from studiopress support, see if you can understand how what Andrea says will help me with this problem:
    Hi;

    The theme tutes here:

    http://my.studiopress.com/setup/modern-portfolio-theme/

    do refer to the menu classes.

    Specifically this section, where it says 'linkclass':

    <span><a class="linkclass" href="http://demo.studiopress.com/modern-portfolio#about">http://demo.studiopress.com/modern-portfolio#about</a>

    Andrea
    I don't think they even read the post or looked at the site! What is your take on this?
    Thanks again,
    Scot

    Sometimes we overlook something in the instructions to set up themes to get it working like the demos. In this case, she is offering you a generic means to rectify the problem by replacing linkclass with a specific class i.e. link-horizonal (if you wanted to call it that) to make something DO something specific via css.

    In your case, it was just extraneous code that was making your custom menu not do what you wanted. And I'm glad we got it sorted out.

    Amy - out of the box the theme should not need any theme css changes.

    The extra menu class was not for styling horizontally. That should work out of the box. It did work as expected in my tests.

    If a new copy is not doing that, then we need to know.

    The class for the above was for the jump links on the menus.

    For future visitors the correct site address is http://www.greengardenjournal.com. The menu is now working properly with the change that asdweb advised. The original response from support had nothing to do with the menu formatting being correct, I was being informed that the formatting had always worked correctly and should be now. The link class was to make the custom menu links to work properly. Not a very helpful response, had it not been for  asdweb, I'd still be looking for answers. Thanks again asdweb!

    Thanks for the shout out szoumbaris!

    Andrea- we'll let you know if we find kinks in the always awesome code that comes out of the box. So far I haven't found any!

    I'm having the same problem as this. Both the header and primary navigation menus are aligned vertically.

    If I remove

    .genesis-nav-menu {
    clear: both;
    overflow: hidden;
    }

    The list becomes bulleted and is still aligned vertically.

    If I remove the 'clear:both' it solves the problem for the header menu, but not primary navigation. Furthermore the menu order is reversed, so contact shows first on the left and about is on the far right. This isn't so much of a problem as I can simply rearrange the menu order.

    The CSS class that I am using for both is genesis-nav-menu, is this correct?

    On the demo site, we did not use the primary or secondary nav menus at all.

    If you do wish to, you can take the css from Genesis and paste it in the style sheet for Modern Portfolio.

    Andrea,

    Can you explain to me how the primary menu on http://demo.studiopress.com/modern-portfolio/blog-1/ is configured please?

    Perhaps then I can understand how to configure it on my homepage.

    As outlined in the instructions:

    http://my.studiopress.com/setup/modern-portfolio-theme/

    we used a custom menu widget in the header right widget area.

    Actually, we did use the primary nav slot as well - it's just hidden on the home page.

    On my messy test site, it works exactly as shown.

    I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly to configure the primary menu then. Regardless of whether I have it showing on the homepage or not, it doesn't align properly.

    I have activated primary menu in genesis settings, imported demo content and used the primary menu provided. I am using genesis-nav-menu as the CSS class, should it be something else?

    You don't need any classes added out of the box. No code to make it look like the demo, as always. Remove whatever code you added so I can see it.

    This should be a help desk ticket rather than a forum thread, as it deals with the theme out of the box - not making custom changes.

    Sorry, posted here as it seemed to be related to the thread. I will use a ticket next tie.

    I have now restored the website to the out of the box code. No CSS class applied to neither the header nor primary menu.

    The primary menu displays on the blog page but has the same issue as the header menu does on the homepage.

    Disable all your plugins too please. THe css for the default menu styling is there in the theme.

    For some reason it's being ignored and I can see you have a caching plugin running, which really should be turned off when you set up a new theme.

    Sorry I forgot about the plugin.

    I have now disabled all plugins. I have the same problem on two fresh local installs which have no plugins activated.

    I am using Chrome but have tested with safari and it's the same.

    Okay, I see what happened. We rolled in a minor update for a menu bug in Chrome and it hosed the menus. :-/

    That's reassuring - I've been going mad thinking there's something small that I'm missing.

    So I guess I need to wait for an update to fix the menus again. Or is there a code workaround I can use?
