It's almost 2014, do you still use tags? Why and why not?

Use of tags is a personal choice. If website has lot of content on different topics, then using tags help visitors read content of their interest. For portfolio websites, tags do not hold much value. From SEO point of view, tags do pull in extra visitors.

So do you think the tag pages (ie. http://domain/com/tag/tagid) helps to pull in extra visitors? I wonder if these pages will be seen as redundant by the search engines in the long run.

Also, when you saw it helps visitors to read content, would you display these in a tag cloud or date cloud etc...?

Use of tags is recommended but if you are using lots of tags in web pages then it will create a hustle bustle to google seach engine. Search engine will not decide to whoom it will give priority. This will prove a loss to your web page and web content too. Tags are used to identify the web page content to whoom it is related to, so i suggest to use tags in ethical way.

By default you should prevent search engine to follow tag pages, this can be easily done in SEO plugin settings. However, even after doing that, it is not surprising to see some tags getting search traffic.

Displaying relevant tags at top or bottom of page is better than showing all tags in a cloud format. In this way, visitor can click through and read more about current topic or related stuff.

Can you elaborate on how to display relevant tags?

I means showing tags on individual posts / pages. For example: you make post "how to open gmail email account", tags that will display could be: email, google, gmail and more (depending on tags used in specific post).

That is what relevant tags implies in above context.

Out of habit, I still click tags when I write a post. However, I do not display the tags on any pages of my site. Maybe one day I'll kick the habit.

I still use tags on a lot of my magazine/media sites, but I got rid of tag clouds when Google started dinging us for them.

On several of those sites, the tags are used to generate a list of "related articles" to entice people to continue to browse through related content, and they are displayed in the post meta.

That's like having seat warmers in your car and never turning them on out of curiosity.
