I tried to use Gutenberg but it doesn't seem to play nicely with Lifestyle Pro (3.1). Then when I switch back and turn on the classic wordpress plugin is all messed up.

Do i need to upgrade my theme to use Guttenburg? Thanks

Lifestyle hasn't been updated and probably will not be updated to Gutenberg. You can try to use Robin Cornett's plugin which will help a little bit - https://robincornett.com/downloads/sixtenpress-block-editor/.

Thanks Anita. Is it advised to use plugins that aren't on the wordpress repository? I couldn't find it there.

I wish I had chosen a theme that would be updated, but there is not way to know in advance if a theme will continue to be updated without being psychic right?
    Thanks

Yes, you can use plugins that are not in the repository. Robin is a contributor to the Genesis Framework. I only recommend products I have faith in and I love all of her products.
