I have now built probably 5 Genesis sites and I am loving it, but I have always wondered the same thing when it came time to install. Do I want it in the root folder or a subdirectory? I have done both and I also found a great plugin the other day to design a splash/intro/maintenance page while it is activated I can work on the site and no one sees it yet. However, this new client does not want the site down even with a temp/maintenance page up. I guess I am wondering what the cons may be for installing the files in a subdirectory. Will this subdirectory always have to be typed in the address bar or will it redirect or what?

June 6, 2013 at 5:08 pm #44446beeParticipantMe too. I like to install in the root, but sometimes there's a site there that I want to remain online until my WP site is finished. ย That's where I am now. Two choices: redirect the URL to the subdirectory OR move the WP site to the root. (I don't know how to do a 301 redirect. ๐
So, yesterday I used BackupCreator to create a backup. When I tried to restore into the root, I broke the site so badly, I had to have the entire site + database restored by my hosting company. ๐
Here's my site: gratertater.com. Here's my WP site: gratertater.com/wp
The goal: having the URL gratertater.com resolve to the WordPress site.
Thanks for any help.

July 31, 2013 at 4:37 pm #53444TracyMemberI'm using the child them "clip cart" and installed it in a subdirectory initially. Today after backing up everything - database, tool export all content and exporting Genesis Seo and theme. Following a utube video for moving the site into the root via changing the url in the database by dropping tables and re uploading (which I was successful with on another site). Here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sydfh3s84js. Something seems to be broken... the site looks fine as well as in the dashboard where I imported my backed up info but when I click on any of my menu / product links I get a 500 internal error. My link is http://jneretail.com
I would appreciate help, please and thankyou so much.July 31, 2013 at 8:02 pm #53473Brad DaltonParticipantI would install the WP Migrate DB plugin and add the new address to the settings before exporting the database.
Also, resave your Permalink settings after importing the DB into a new DB and changing the connection details in your WP Config file.
July 31, 2013 at 9:18 pm #53488TracyMemberNow I'm afraid and I'm just confused. I'm thankful that the site move turned out as well as it did but as I said the widgets are gone in my footer and some styling etc. Are they gone or will I find them saved somewhere. Now I'm having to re-learn again. How frustrating.
July 31, 2013 at 9:24 pm #53491Brad DaltonParticipantShouldn't be gone. You may have to drag them in again as they may have moved to the inactive widget area or another active widget.
