I want to have several index pages with links to all the pages in that category. At present I am making them simple text links, but I'm thinking links which use the page thumbnail might be nicer. The idea would be to have page content like this:

    1. Heading and intro text
    2. Text about a particular topic
    3. One or more row(s) of thumbnails on this topic, with text, just like is often shown on Home Page and Posts page.
    4. Text about another topic
    5. Thumbnails
    etc
    6. Footer

So I'm wondering how might be the best way to achieve this. I can think of a number of options.

    1. It may be that some themes have this already - perhaps as some sort of portfolio page? I'm currently using Minimum Pro theme and I don't want to change just yet, but I may be willing to in the future.

    2. There are plugins to add widget areas within text. But I'm trying to avoid using too many plugins, especially if I can achieve the result some other way.

    3. Some plugins use shortcodes. Could I set up a shortcode myself to insert a widget area? I've never done that before but it seems it could be the most flexible option.

    4. I could create new widget areas for each category then make the intro text the content and use the genesis_after_content hook to add the widget area(s). Nothing would show on all other pages if I add nothing to the widget areas. I know how to do this, but I'm not sure if it's the most efficient.

    5. Perhaps the simplest is to do it all in HTML and CSS, by setting up a links division within which would be 4 side-by-side divisions, each with a thumbnail and some text. If I did this, is there are way to link to the thumbnail size, or would I have to call the full featured image graphic and limit its size with CSS?

Sorry for the long question, but I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and has some advice, or if I'm overlooking something obvious. Thanks.

    Hi,

This sounds like you want to create a category archive template: http://wpsites.net/wordpress-tips/create-custom-category-archive-page-template/

Hi, thanks for replying. I had given up on this idea, not finding any way to do it. I'll check out what you suggest. Thanks.
