I'm busy renovating my photography site and have chosen the modern portfolio theme.  However, I'm coming across a few challenges.  I did find from another thread here how to get the navigation bar back up, which was good.

I can't figure out how to get the images showing from my blog posts in that section. I've read through the instructions for the theme but it doesn't actually say the images have to be featured images - I'm guessing they need to be. Which is a challenge for me because the images aren't uploaded to the site, but rather linked from my Flickr account. As I have hundreds of images on my site through my blog and other entries, I didn't want to fill up my webspace so prefer to link from them Flickr instead.

Is there a way to get the images showing or do I have to do the featured image option for them to show up on the home page?

Hi Kathie, try this plugin. It states that the first Flickr image found in your blog will be used as the Featured Image - http://wordpress.org/plugins/flickr-shortcode-importer/. Let me know how that works out for you. Good luck.

Unfortunately it produces an error code when activating the plugin.  I've googled the error message but nothing comes up. I'll go off to wordpress.org to see if anyone has any idea of what it means. Thanks for your help.
