Learning how to build a child theme is not a topic that can be answered in a simple answer to a post. I recommend the following as a starter point: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

For a class, I recommend Know The Code. https://knowthecode.io/series/lets-build-custom-developers-genesis-starter-child-theme

This course for building a child theme is comprised of 104 videos and runs for over 14 hours. It is thorough and Tonya's teaching style is clear.

Is it correct that: in Genesis, the themes are equivalent to child-themes? I understand that as long as I do not modify the basic Genesis framework, I can make changes to the themes fairly safely. Is that true information?

Yes Toni. For the most part changes are done to functions.php and style.css in the child theme. Child themes are rarely, if ever, updated so your changes are preserved if the framework is updated.
