How to highlight a menu item

Hello everyone, I'm using the genesis parallax theme and trying to highlight the login menu item on my site. How would I do it when the login/logut link is hardcoded on to the functions.php (the code below) I have tried adding the "highlight" code from the atmosphere pro theme but nothing changes..what I;m missing? How would I add the highlight style code to the link below?

Add a class to the li element and use CSS to highlight it with any color you choose.
