So I activated the Genesis default theme to see how it looks like on my site, and deactivated the Genesis Extender plugin that contains all the css etc. from the old site. I didn't see the wide and full width align options in the image block, so I searched and found a function to enable it. Now I can see the options in the Image Block and when I click Wide it shows the image wide as in the demo on the Studiopress site. But in the front end nothing is happening.

Any idea what is going wrong?

You need to add the correct CSS to the front-end style sheet. Gutenberg doesn't do that for you: https://gist.github.com/vfontjr/dd1314187c3d8c5e5591638f172ee9dc

Ah okay, thanks. I thought it did because this is how it works in the theme Genesis Sample, as seen here on the Shop for Themes page.
