    Since most Genesis child themes can be completely customized, how does one choose the best child theme to start with?

    If you are a developer or know bit of css / php - then use Genesis Sample theme to create any kind of layout.

    Else you can choose specific Genesis theme that resemble closest to what you are looking for.
