    I am trying to figure out how to add a search box in the top header area

    You should be able to add a search widget to the header-right widget area.

    You have some content there now (something similar to your tagline and a some text (motto) so it creates some conflicts. You could rearrange the text into your header image or slider presentation, or add the search widget in another (footer?) location.
