The new text widget in WordPress 4.8 is based on TinyMCE, the same editor used for posts and pages. If you edit HTML content in a text widget after the 4.8 upgrade, make sure you remove all extraneous line breaks of your content will looked mangled after you save it. This is because the new Text Widget now uses the WPAUTOP filter and it cannot be turned off for the widget.

    Thanks Victor.

The text widget "improvements" in WP 4.8 also remove all "i" tags, which are used in many Genesis theme setup guides to insert icon fonts. For example, the 6 panels in widget area 4 on the front page of the popular Infinity Pro theme.

    What a mess.

So, this happened to me, and now I want my icons back and don't know how to add them. How do we do this now?

Unfortunately, the data you lost is gone. If you can restore the site from a backup, you can salvage what you lost. If not, use the new HTML widget in place of the text widget or use our Classic Text Widget

Thanks! Is there a way to just code it into the existing text widgets using a TinyMCE shortcode?
