I am creating a photography/portfolio site. For this I want to present 2-3 portfolios.

I really like how some of the child themes show portfolios on the home page, especially the hover effects. However, I want these effect for the portfolios (i.e. photo galleries) themselves rather than for the so called "portfolio pages".

In fact, I could do without the portfolio pages altogether if I could show the gallery with these hover effects, and use one of the lightbox plugins to popup the photo on click.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

You can use the gallery native to WordPress and use CSS for the hover effects.

Any suggestions or snippet references for the hover effects?

Which hover effects are you referring to? Please link to the page.

You can inspect the image and find the CSS which creates the hover effect in the style sheet.
