Hey folks, this is my first truely non-code/WordPress related post. Some of you may already be aware of my fitness journey via Twitter or Facebook. If you aren't feel free to get more of the backstory and see how I'm doing on my fitness blog.

The short version is this. I did carpentry before I switched to Youth Pastoring and then WordPress development. I am still a Youth Pastor by the way. When doing full time carpentry my job was my fitness routine. When I stopped I started gaining weight. Late nights, all nights, and lots of Pizza and fast food with the teens doesn't help either. I ended up gaining a LOT of weight and recently decided I needed to work on my overall fitness.

I started doing the Power90 program and as of today I've lost nearly 40lbs, plus significantly improved my flexibility and ability to sustain a cardio workout. I've written a good deal about this stuff on the blog so I won't bore you with the details.

I'm going to be including a 30 minute walk/jog routine as well because I am planning on completing my first 5k in March. Then I have plans to complete Tough Mudder in September 2013.

I know Brian is a runner, and is in great shape. He has done lots of different kinds of races and trains nearly every day. Rafal (the lead designer at StudioPress) is doing Krav Mega. If you have friended him on Facebook there is a pic of him looking pretty freakin awesome after getting his last level. I won't be picking any fights with him.

Basically, my point is that fitness needs to be a big part of our lives as "geeks" so what are you doing? Any advice on how I can best prepare for the goals I have?

Good luck with the Power90 program, and congratulations on your weight loss!

I moved from Chicago to Fort Worth about 3 years ago. While living in Chicago, I walked pretty much everywhere, and even when living in the suburbs, there was the walk from the train station to the office and back. Since moving to Texas, I've had to resort to driving the car everywhere. I live 1.8 miles from my office, but people look at me like I'm nuts if I walk to and from the office - you wouldn't believe the number of my co-workers who stop and ask me if I need a ride if they drive past me.  🙂

That's my way of saying that moving to Texas has resulted in a more sendentary lifestyle, so I really need to make a more conscious effort to get out there and get some exercise. Maybe I need a goal to work towards - a 5k would be a good start. A few of the guys from work participate in "mud run" events - that sounds like fun, and maybe should be something I aim for.

    Good luck with the training!

    Susan,

Yeah, the midwest/southwest is a different culture. I live near DC now, so when I am forced to go to the City we walk everywhere, or take the metro. Actually we usually park at Vienna station, the first metro station on our way in, so I don't have to deal with traffic inside the beltway at all.

I live in a more rural setting and I think if I tried walking into town, which is only 3 miles, I'd be run over. Fortunately people are pretty cool about it if I'm walking in town. So if I'm not in a hurry I like to park in one place and walk everywhere.

When I lived in the midwest and south west I never walked, no one ever walked. I did start bike riding till I nearly got run over.

Let me know how things go and if we have a Genesis Connect event at South By Southwest again you need to come meet the crew. It is jut down the road in Austin.

Would definitely love to go to Genesis Connect event! I'd love to meet the crew, and Austin is one of my favorite cities to visit!
