I have tried to work with the featured posts to minimize the size of it and make it look attractive but with the widget with the theme you are limited on making image smaller.

Do you have suggestions on plugins or ideas on minimizing this featured posts widget?

Are you trying to make the featured images smaller? If so, change the featured image size in your functions.php file (or add a new featured image size there)
