    I am looking to add top to bottom fading or gradient borders to parts of my site. Google has turned up some options, but some seem to only work in webkit-related browsers (if only ie would just go away).

    Any thoughts as to how to accomplish this? Anyone else tried it?

    You can use a gradient generator or add an actual image file as the background.
