I am developing a site using the Essence Pro theme (no link currently available but examples provided below). When I check the site on https://www.powermapper.com/products/sortsite/ads/acc-accessibility-testing/ there are 2 accessibility issues that result in poor ratings. As my site will focus on individuals with disabilities, it is important that I try to meet accessibility requirements.
1. On the home page / front page, if I use a custom logo, PowerMapper reports under “SEARCH” that there is no H1 element, which violates Bing guidelines. If I leave the Site Title and do not use a custom logo, this error is not present. Using WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool I see the same results regarding the H1 element when a custom logo is used (Missing first level heading). How can I add an H1 element and still use the custom logo?
2. On the blog and category pages, PowerMapper reports under “ACCESSIBILITY” that every post on these pages has duplicate links because the featured image is taking on the post title in “ALT”. The PowerMapper error states: Using ALT text which duplicates link text in the same link or the following link results in screen readers stuttering as the same text is read out twice. Use ALT='' when the image is part of a link containing text, or change the redundant ALT text if the links are separate. Using WAVE, I also receive the errors regarding redundant links. For each featured image, I have entered specific ALT text that differs from the post title, but my ALT text is being overwritten by the post title. The home page also has a widget area where featured pages are displayed, and the featured images in this section also result in duplicate links. Is there a way to make the featured image not clickable/not linked so that duplicate links are not created? Or is there a way to not have WordPress change the ALT text for featured images?
I have checked other sites that have been referenced in this forum as using Essence Pro and I have observed the same issues that I am experiencing.Example: On the site http://cathytemp.wordkeeper.net/ on PowerMapper, both the SEARCH No H1 on the homepage” and the ACCESSIBILITY – ALT & duplicate links from featured images are being reported.
Example: On the site http://cartwheelsacrossthesky.com/ on PowerMapper, the home page does not report the SEARCH No H1 issue, but the E-Book page does have the issue. The featured pages in the widget area on all pages reports the ACCESSIBLITY duplicate links issue.
Example: On the site http://www.chillivinegar.co.uk/ on PowerMapper, the home page reports the SEARCH No H1 issue. There is no content on the site to display the duplicate links issue.
Example: On the site https://easylivingjazz.co.uk/ they are using the site title not a custom logo. On PowerMapper, the home page does not report the SEARCH No H1 issue. They are not using any category or blog pages and are not using the featured page widget, so there are no reports of duplicate links.
Thanks for any assistance that you can offer!
