Hi,
I inherited a site built on Agentpress/Genesis with a custom home page. It is here: http://www.mcfarlanefield.net/ There is a css problem that causes the entire right side of the page to be obscured. It's almost like there's a big white block sitting on top of the content on the right side of the page. Any css guru's have any ideas?
Thanks so much.

February 14, 2013 at 1:29 am #20253Tony @ AlphaBlossomMemberIt looks like your #inner and #content-sidebar-wrap are set to 862px/865px wide. They should be set wider, a quick look seems like it should be 960px.

You might need to add a conditional tag to your child themes functions.php file and then target the problem in your style.css file.
Here's 2 tutorials with code that you can try or modify.
February 14, 2013 at 7:26 am #20295annestudiopressMemberThanks for your suggestions! I commented out the !important widths on these 2 divs (#inner and #content-sidebar-wrap) and that did the trick. In firebug for some reason I was not seeing these widths. I don't know why these 2 widths were set up in the css by the person who customized this page but they are now gone forever.

@braddalton thank you for the link 🙂

February 15, 2013 at 12:57 pm #20559annestudiopressMemberIt's hard inheriting code from someone else. Thanks to both of you for the tips and links. Now I just have to figure out why it's so totally broken in IE. Sigh.
February 15, 2013 at 1:27 pm #20565Tony @ AlphaBlossomMemberIt can be frustrating trying to make sense of someone else's work. Glad we could help.
You have no doctype declared, which is why it looks so bad in ie.

February 15, 2013 at 1:34 pm #20569annestudiopressMemberThere is a doctype, it is this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
There is a <style> statement BEFORE the doctype, however, I have no idea why this is there or where it would come from in a WordPress theme. It looks like this:<style>
.content
</style>Any ideas why that would precede everything in the agentpress child theme? And how do you get rid of it?
February 15, 2013 at 1:59 pm #20574Tony @ AlphaBlossomMemberThat's the problem...the doctype has to be declared first, and in ie it's throwing it into quirks mode. I looked at your site on ie and the docs mode defaulted to quircks mode. When I changed it to ie9 or ie8 the site looks good.
I would check your functions.php to see if you see anything that is placing the style tags first. Otherwise, it looks like it was hardcoded somewhere and you'll have to find that.

February 15, 2013 at 4:35 pm #20603annestudiopressMemberI found it hardcoded in the template file for the home page. Crazy! Looking good in ie8 and ie9 now, nothing I can't handle in ie7 but not really sure if I need to support that as it's 1% of browser usage these days. Thank you **SO MUCH** for your help!!
