I just read an article about how to change themes seamlessly, if I remember rightly it was about keeping certain files in a different area. Like a fool I forgot to bookmark it for future reference and now I can't find it. I thought it was by Brian Gardner but I could not find it in his blog either. Does anyone know?

It depends whether your site use custom post type, custom taxonomy etc.

If it's just a widget, it's easy. Just deactivate your current theme, activate new theme and drag the widget back to it's position (sometimes the widgets are messed up).

If your site is just a blog, no need to worry anything.
