I am reworking my site to have standalone pages instead of category archive views.

I love the tab widget but would like to change it or create a custom version that would be used for pages (featured image tabs etc) instead of categories.

Pages support is not present in that plugin out of box. There is extended version of that plugin here - https://wordpress.org/plugins/genesis-tabs-extended/ (I haven't tried it, looks like even this does not support pages).
