I just took a test drive of buddypress, and I was a bit abashed at how generic it seemed. I don't know nor could I ascertain all the features of the plugin just from perusing the test drive, but it just seemed a bit common and "forum-like". Does anyone have anything that they could share with me in their use of buddypress that might help me to see a different perspective? There were reviews on the plugin page that were encouraging, but then I looked at the sites the reviewers were sporting, and I wasn't impressed. So far, I am very impressed with the work I see being done in the showcases here on this site. Anyway, help if you care to or if you can.

Have you found any Studiopress/Buddypress sites that really knocked you out yet? I'm in the same situation that you are. I have one site that has an old phpBB board that needs to be changed to WordPress, and a super busy site that needs a full upgrade to a great new theme and Buddypress combination.
I've used Studiopress exclusively for years but I find myself looking at other premium themes now. Maybe there's a Studiopress theme that is specifically designed for Buddypress but I haven't found it yet. All suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

There isn't one particular theme that has been developed for Buddypress, however I and a few others have been using the Outreach theme. There's a few kinks but you can get it to work by searching the forum area for Outreach and Buddypress. You will need to install the GenesisConnect plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/genesis-connect-for-buddypress/) to assist you with properly formatting the pages.

Do you (or anyone else) have a URL that I can look at? Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it! Changing a site to Buddypress is a major decision so I just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into. 🙂
I listed two URL's above in previous comments. Take a look at those. The one thing to keep in mind is that phpBB is just a forum board. Buddypress is more of a social network platform that you can integrate a forum board into. The forum that integrates the best without issues is BBpress.org, however I personally don't care for BBpress. Maybe I need to give it more time, I don't know. But you really want to set up a demo site and develop your new site, work out the kinds and play around with it. You'll have much more to monitor with a social networking platform than just a forum board. Email me on my website if you need help.

Hi, I'm editor of xpat.no. I've found BuddyPress easy to setup and use, if you know your way around CSS then you can create a very unique look.
BUT!
You can't just build a thriving community from scratch, whatever system you use. So, I've kept things simple so far by focusing on a bbPress install with BuddyPress to manage registration and user profiles. I may or may not move the site from a forum to social network, it depends on what the community wants as it grows. There's nothing worse than an empty social network!
As for Genesis, I've found it plays reasonably well with BuddyPress via the Genesis Connect widget. The forthcoming release of BuddyPress (v1.7) is designed to work better with any theme. The integration with bbPress has also improved lately.
I am NOT an expert in WordPress, bbPress or BuddyPress, I'm not a coder, and I'm not a designer - but I've managed to get a half-decent site together.
