This past year as I have been learning WordPress and slowly built my site, I have studiously avoided any kind of programming beyond simple HTML. I've always found plugins to do what I wanted.

However, I want to make a few more simple changes to my Executive Pro site, that I don't think I can do with Plug-ins.

(In particular I want to begin to blog at http://meditatingentrepreneur.com/ . I am using a second site http://theaccidentalentrepreneurs.com/ as a sandbox. On the sandbox site I would like to try making the Home-top widget 2 columns rather than 3. Secondly, I would like to move the large comment box to the end of the post.)

I believe I have to paste in pHP or CSS snippets to accomplish this. Thanks to the generosity of forum members and those on other sites, at least for these questions, people would probably provide snippets or point me in right direction.

However, I don't know what to do with snippets. Also, if possible I want to make changes to my site and forget about them even if WordPress, Genesis or Executive Pro upgrades.

Can anyone suggest tutorials of how to find files that can be modified and what dangers lurk? (Also, I welcome solutions to the two problems I gave).

Sorry for so much embedded in my question, but given where I am at, I didn't see how to avoid it. Thanks in advance.

lynda.com has a great selection of technical videos. I also recommend, CSS3: The Missing Manual. If you work through this book, you will learn a ton.
