I am new to Genesis and trying to add a text section to my home page. I am not sure whether to register a widget area, execute a hook, or add a sidebar. Do I change the functions.php, home.php or both?
What is the best method to accomplish this?

On the home page I simply want to add a text area above the social icons.

You're over thinking it. Just add a second text widget to the same Featured widget area above the one with your social links. Or you can even add your text to the same text widget as your social icons above your existing code.

Thanks for the quick response Chris.

I did consider that but I did not want the text area to be in columns as the social widgets are.  Instead I just wanted a paragraph to run across the width of the area.
