I am trying to find a good theme for a health magazine style website. I will have affiliate links and services on the right banner, etc customized banner. I was using the sahifa theme through themeforrest but wanted to try genesis for the added security and other great options. I decided to go all out and buy the 400 dollar package and give it a try.
To be honest i was disappointed that many of themes do not seem as customizable as i thought they would be. I am trying to do simple things such as put a background image in the header. When i try to do this the image size is limited to the logo space. I would say I am a beginner to mid level kind of guy when it comes to wordpress web design so maybe i missed something but i thought more basic color changing options and widgets would be available to help me do these things easily.
If anyone can give me a good recommendation on a theme to start with and let me know if i missed any menus or anything in the dashboard i would really appreciate it. I have been reading many of the tutorials but it seems like i need to edit code to do some very basic things that were much easier in some of the theme forrest themes such as putting up an large header image, changing colors, etc.
If anyone can recommend where to start as far as themes, plugins, or other tutorials i would greatly appreciate. At the moment I am kind of disappointed. I like the designs but its definitely not like what i thought it would be. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry you're having difficulty! While there are a number of plugins to make Genesis easier to use, many customizations do require a bit of coding. The new Genesis Palette Pro plugin that I recommended to you earlier gives you color pickers to change nearly any color on the site.
There is also a custom header plugin from SureFire Web Services (though it still requires a little bit of CSS, as shown in the video).

The genesis palate pro looks great but i really do not want to spend another 150 dollars right now considering im just experimenting with this. Can you direct me to any tutorials on how to edit all this stuff manually?
Where do i edit the CSS? Do i need to use an FTP program? Any recommendations for that? I tried using that once and it messed some stuff up on my server.

That way if one of your changes doesn't work well, you'll be able to find it to change it back. If you ever need to replace the stylesheet with the original, you can unzip the theme on your computer, open style.css in a text editor, and copy and paste it over the one in Appearance > Editor. Hopefully that makes sense.
As for editing functions.php (which is common), I always recommend that you do that via FTP or your LunarPages CPanel file manager because any errors can prevent you from accessing your WordPress dashboard. If you make the changes in FTP or file manager, you can change back anything that might cause an error.
As for the logo, it really depends on the child theme. If you want to pick the theme you like best (I see you've changed a couple of times since we talked earlier) and email me, I'll walk you through.
