I would like to limit the number of characters that show up on the first blog post on the homepage of the Balance theme but have not been able to accomplish that.

The demo site for the Balance theme (https://demo.studiopress.com/balance/?_ga=2.93111193.566563666.1521092861-28260868.1521092861) shows only an excerpt of the first blog post with a link to the full post that says, "continue reading." On the site I'm working on, the full blog post is shown. How do I get it to be like the demo site with only an excerpt for the initial blog post on the homepage?

I tried changing the theme settings for the Content Archives from "Entry excerpts" to "Entry content" and limiting the number of characters shown, but that had no effect on the first blog post on the homepage, it was still full length. How do I get only an excerpt of the initial blog post to show up on the homepage?

    Hi Eric,

You should be able to insert a Genesis - Featured Posts widget into that space and display only one post and control how it appears. Have you tried this? I see you are using a static front page so it should be possible.

    Hi Erika,

Thanks for your advice. It's actually not a static front page, it's set to "Your latest posts" in the Reading Settings. The Balance theme displays the posts like that on the homepage, with the latest post at the top of the page with no columns and then the second latest on down in two columns. The box at the top is an option on the Balance theme.

The Balance theme demo (https://demo.studiopress.com/balance/?_ga=2.39036199.566563666.1521092861-28260868.1521092861) shows the top post as an excerpt with a "continue reading" link. I haven't been able to find a way to control the number of characters shown in the top post. It just displays the full post.

Go into the edit screen of the top post and click the Screen Options tab at the top. Check the Excerpt box (if it's not already) and put the text in there you would like to show. That may fix it.

I checked the Balance theme's setup instructions and there is hardly anything there. I'm guessing you already did that!
