Hi, I am new here. I am considering buying the Genesis Framework and the Ambiance child theme, but I have a few questions please. I plan to use it on an existing website and blog - i.e. it has many pages as well as posts, and most or all pages have individual graphics. I am familiar with CSS, and can do a little PHP coding too.

    1. If I make a static home page, will I be able to use widgets on that page to show featured posts with a small featured image/thumbnail, also a search box, also a sidebar with widgets, etc, to give me good flexibility in the design?

    2. If I use featured image to create thumbnails for posts and pages (say with a related posts/pages widget), will that require the thumbnails to be stored as a separate graphic, or is the thumbnail created by automatically cropping the larger image?

    3. Is it possible to have a widget area at the bottom of a post or page, not in the footer, but in the text?

I suppose these may sound like weird questions, but I'm just trying to understand what this child theme can and can't do. Thanks.

    1. The theme already includes an index.php page which you can add widgets to or replace with a front-page.php file.
    2. WordPress generates several copies of each image you upload according to your Media settings and any additional custom sizes added to your functions file using add_image_size and stores them in your uploads folder according to date.
    3. Yes. See the code snippets page. Requires the addition of 1 line of PHP code to your child themes functions.php file.

Hey Brad, thanks heaps, that was amazingly quick.

    I should be able to manage 1 & 3.

Re 2: is that standard for all WordPress? I guess that obviates the need to generate images on the fly as the page is loaded? My present site is a hand coded website with a WordPress blog, and uses images that are stored in 3 separate places - in a graphics folder I have created, on Picasa and uploaded to WordPress. I guess I'm going to have a lot of work moving some of them around to the right place.

I can see this upgrade is going to be time-consuming!
