Add static area above header in Altitude-pro

I would like to add an area before the header for the phone number and perhaps social icons before the header on all pages including the landing page. I tried adding a widget area, but the area disappeared as I scrolled down the page. I’m very limited in my php knowledge; I grabbed the suggested PHP code to register the widget area, but then what?

Help! Anyone. I really love this theme almost as is and don’t want to change theme to get a before-header ‘bar’ that I suspect is easy to add.
