I pulled the trigger and updated to 5.0 of wordpress a few days ago and ran into an issue. I've since taken it to 5.0.3 thinking that may help. The Gutenberg editor would not work at all, got the blank screen, so I installed the Classic Editor, but on it, I don't get my menu items and all the text is white and I can't even load the visual editor.

I disabled all my plugins, tried several things on the net and finally just disabled Genesis Education Pro for one of the 20XX themes. After that everything works.

I saw the other thread where everything was rosy after upgrading. but not with me.

Has anyone got any ideas what else I may need to do to get my child theme back working so I can edit posts?

A couple things. Do you know what version of PHP your site is running on? If not, add this plugin called Display PHP Version. Once installed/activated, go to the Dashboard and you will see the version has been add. If it's say, 5.6 or something lower than that - you should increase the PHP version.

If you are already up to 7.1+, then possibly downgrade WordPress using this plugin. Before you proceed though, I'd make a backup of the site.

I was still on php 5.4 since that is all Centos likes. I went ahead and upgraded to 7.2 and upgrade my mysql version just to be safe. That made no difference. The strange thing is this only affects existing posts. I can create a new one and it works as expected, but then once its saved, even as a draft, then the behavior is exhibited where any of the text goes to a white background and none of the visual editor controls show up.

    This is very strange

Sorry for not replying sooner. I had a death in the family and this issue got put on the back burner. I'm running Centos on this box so PHP was a little dated. I went ahead and brought apache up to 2.4 and PHP to 7.2. No difference. I also read about replacing he tinymce folder when this happens but that made no difference either.

Since I have a developer license, I just downloaded Magazine pro and its working like a top. I'm guessing now that this must be some change I made to the theme either in the functions.php or some other mod I made at some point. I don't really remember all the changes I may have made on this theme as I've been running it for several years.

I've been considering changing the theme anyway to something that looks a little more modern in hopes of helping conversions anyway. I think I'm just going to modify the magazine pro theme and go with it and ditch education pro instead of trying to figure this one out.
